Quick Review: The Reaping (2007)

March 2nd, 2008 by RM · No Comments ·

Mediocre 3:16Neither overly frightening nor surprising, The Reaping is, well, just mediocre. Fine for a rental when you don’t want to ponder what you’re watching, but definitely not a film to buy. The bayou setting adds quite a bit to the tone, and the plot is fine enough with a little twist at the end, but there isn’t much in the way of character development and the film relies too heavily on flashbacks and dream sequences. Everything wraps up a bit too tidily in the end, and it feels like the director arbitrarily decided which elements of the dreams/hallucinations were “real” and directly affected the plot and which ones could be ignored entirely.

You’re basically left wondering, “Wait, so that part of the dream sequence actually happened and was integral to the story, but the other part of that same dream sequence didn’t happen and had no effect on it whatsoever? Um… what?”
