breathing room

August 11th, 2008 by RM · No Comments ·

For those following the trials and tribulations of my employment over the last week (which is apparently quite a few people, given the traffic on the site lately), I have a bit more news.

After having a long conversation with ComicMix Chairman Brian Alvey last week, I will now be finishing out the month on the ComicMix payroll, which provides Jessica and I with some much-needed breathing room and the ability to be a bit less frantic when approaching our respective job hunts. I’ll be spending most of the remaining month tying up loose ends and making sure everything that was in the late stages of production ends up on the site in some form or another. Most importantly, this also gives me the chance to ensure that the ComicMix contributors I worked with are paid for their July work - which was also one of my big concerns when all of the changes at ComicMix were announced last week.

On the post-ComicMix front, I’ve heard from a few outlets over the last five days or so, many of which heard about me via readers of mindpollution.org, my facebook profile, friendfeed or my twitterings. So, in addition to earning my most sincere thanks to everyone who passed the word along, I guess this is proof-positive that the “community” aspect of the ‘Net really can have a positive, personal effect.

I’m still not entirely certain where the next step is going to take me, but I’ve started to warm up to the idea of adding a bit more freelancing to my professional diet, and possibly breaking out of the comics and entertainment industry scene, to some degree. While I’m not sure it’s accurate to say I’ve missed covering other subjects, it certainly feels as if there’s a part of my brain I haven’t flexed in quite a while.

Is going the full-time freelance route the answer? I’m not certain that it is, but then again, I’m not certain about a lot of things these days… so I’ll just try to keep the ball rolling and see where I end up.
