fantasy football 2008: the first draft

August 23rd, 2008 by RM · 4 Comments ·

Earlier this week, I mentioned that I had my first draft of the 2008 Fantasy Football Season. The league is populated by a few current and former Wizard Entertainment staffers, as well as some professionals from around the comics industry. I haven’t done very well in this league the last couple of years, as the scoring system is wildly different from the one I’m accustomed to in my own league (I’ve run a league for about five years now) and many of the others I’ve been involved with, but it’s still a really enjoyable experience each year.

For any readers who are into this sort of thing (and from the response I received to my last Fantasy Football-related post, there are a few of you out there), here are the league specs: It’s a 12-team, 2-keeper league that follows the “points-per-reception” style of scoring. I kept Marion Barber and Chad Johnson from last year’s team.

STARTING ROSTER
QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Pit
RB: Marion Barber, Dal
RB: Ronnie Brown, Mia
WR: Chad Johnson, Cin
WR: Santonio Holmes, Pit
TE: Vernon Davis, SF
K: Josh Brown, StL
D/ST: Green Bay Packers

BENCH
QB: Jake Delhomme, Car
RB: Jonathan Stewart, Car
RB: Leon Washington, NYJ
WR: Nate Burleson, Sea
WR: Chris Chambers, SD
WR: Andre Caldwell, Cin
D/ST: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I’m a bit nervous about Ronnie Brown now that news reports are saying he might be too injured to play the opening game and could possibly lose his starting spot. I feel good about my QB situation, as both Roethlisberger and Delhomme are capable signal-callers with good statistics. I’m equally satisfied with my stable of receivers this season, as I think almost every one of them can contribute each week. I drafted Andre Caldwell as my traditional “Good Luck Gator” - I always draft at least one former University of Florida player and then proceed to cut the player as the season goes on and roster space gets tight. But it’s the thought that counts, right?

Nice fantasy draft. Ronnie Brown is a big concern. Did someone snag Ricky Williams or is he still your league’s free agent list. Get him if you can as a handcuff.

I like the Roethlisburger/Holmes combo. I always try to get a QB/Receiver combo from the same team.
I would be worried about Ronnie Brown, like the guy above me mentioned, if Ricky Williams is available I’d snatch him up.
I take it that there aren’t to many quality receivers available based on your reserve, they look to be a weak spot. If any are available I’d try to upgrade that position especially with Chad Johnson playing with with a torn labrum.
Take a look at Robert Meachum of the Saints, if he is available you may want to grab him. He has alot of upside this year especially in the pass happy offense of the Saints. Two things I can talk hours about are comics and football.

Yeah, the Ronnie Brown news just keeps getting worse… so I keep getting more worried about this draft. I don’t have a lot of confidence in this team as it stands now, so I plan to keep an eye on the waiver wires and injury reports this season and try to capitalize on some good pick-ups in the first few weeks.

Unfortunately, Ricky Williams wasn’t wasn’t available in this draft at a viable round, so I’m gambling pretty heavy on Brown for the first few weeks.

By the way, I looked into Robert Meachem on your suggestion, Gary, and ended up picking him up in my second draft last night. I’ll post the results today. Thanks for the tip!
