webcomic roundup: flobots, chrome, aliens and predators

September 8th, 2008 by Rick · No Comments ·

Xavier Xerexes of ComixTalk recently made me aware of DJ Coffman‘s new gig: a webcomic project that partners him with political-minded musicians The Flobots and titled Rise of the Flobots: Architects of Change. Haven’t heard of Flobots? Check out this video for Handlebars. The comic looks great thus far, and I’m disappointed that I only heard about it recently, as it looks like it’s been going on for quite a while now. Interesting stuff, and I’m glad to see Coffman’s name popping up again.

The Daily News has a nice interview with Scott McCloud about his Google Chrome tutorial comic that created all sorts of buzz around technology and comics circles. Here’s an excerpt:

DN: What do you think about the comic being published under a Creative Commons License?

SM: Well, it’s not the most liberal variety of Creative Commons. They just ask that you give credit to the source and not screw with it. But it suits me just fine to let it out into the wild like that — it’s also very Googley. It’s very much like Chrome itself — open-source. They’re really eager for people to adopt some of the features in Chrome in their own browsers or in other entirely different software projects. It really does make sense. Google is not preventing this as just pure altruism; it’s in their enlightened self-interest to get all browsers to improve. They live on the web, (laughs) so it makes sense. The more comfortable people are doing computing on the web, the better off they are.

Octopus Pie gets animated! (Okay, not exactly… but it’s still a great little bonus in today’s strip.)

Entrepeneur.com has a short little article that doesn’t really say anything new about webcomics, but does interview Joey Manley and Jeff Rowland, which is pretty neat. Hoo-rah for webcomic creators and their entrepeneurial savvy! (via Gary)

By the way, did you catch my interview with Alien Loves Predator and If You See Something creator Bernie Hou last week? No? For shame!
