It’s Official: I am now part of Doctor Who canon.

Well, I can cross one BIG item off the bucket list, folks. I am now a character in the Doctor Who universe.

In this week’s issue of the Doctor Who comic book series by IDW Publishing, you’ll find me making a cameo in one of the panels — right alongside the comic’s creative team.

Here’s the full page where I’m located:

And here’s a close-up of the panel:

Look familiar? Well, it should!

I owe my brief appearance in the Doctor Who universe to artist Matthew Dow Smith, the ridiculously talented illustrator (and occasional writer) who offered to include me in one of his upcoming issue of the series. While it’s an awesome honor simply to appear in a comic book, it’s an extra-special moment for me for a few reasons.

First, it’s a Doctor Who comic book! I mean, come on — it’s THE DOCTOR.

Second, IDW has put together a really amazing creative team for their Doctor Who series, with writer Tony Lee, artist Matthew Dow Smith, editor Denton Tipton, and colorist Charlie Kirchoff. It’s basically a dream team of sorts for this particular character, and having had many, many conversations with Tony Lee and the rest of the team about the good Doctor, I feel like the character’s comic book adventures are getting the same level of love and imagination that he gets in the television series. So I can’t help feeling really great about the fact that my cameo occurs right alongside their likenesses in that panel.

Finally, Matthew Dow Smith is a Capital Region guy who lives and works not too far away from where I grew up and where I cut my teeth in the journalism biz. We have yet to meet in person, but I clearly owe him a drink (or six) if we ever connect in the old hometown.

So hey, make sure to go out and buy Doctor Who #8, everyone — not just because I’m in it, but because it’s totally going to be a collector’s item once I buy up all of the issues I can find.

Many thanks to Matthew Dow Smith and the rest of the Doctor Who team for making this happen.
