New Comics Day: What I’m reading from this week’s list (November 9, 2011)

November 10th, 2011 by Rick Marshall · No Comments ·

This list comes a day late, but that’s because I wasn’t able to hit the comics shop until today. I could apologize for the delay, but once you see what kept me out of town the last few days (and it should be ready soon), I think you’ll be amused enough to forgive the day-late post.

So, without further ado, here is the list of comics I’m checking out this week:

30 DAYS OF NIGHT #2
- Really enjoyed the first issue of this one, so I’m sticking around for issue #2.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1
- I’m curious to see how this one turns out, so I’m on board for issue #1.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #3
- This is another one of the relaunched New 52 titles I enjoyed, but it’s definitely not in my top ten — so it will be interesting to see how long I stick with it.

BOYS TP VOL 09 BIG RIDE
- As I mentioned in a previous post, I like this series better in collected form, so this TP will inevitably make it to my bookshelf.

CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE TP (MR)
- I really, really like Avatar’s Chronicles of Wormwood series. It’s definitely adults-only material, but it never fails to crack me up while telling a wild story.

DEATHSTROKE #3
- I’ve enjoyed the heck out of this New 52 title, and it’s definitely up there in my top 5-10 series coming out of the relaunch.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #3
- This series is so weird, and I can’t stop reading it.

GHOST RIDER #5
- I’m a fan of the character, and enjoying this arc.

GODZILLA GANGSTERS AND GOLIATHS TP
- If you haven’t checked out any of IDW’s Godzilla series yet, you’re missing out. They manage to remind me why I loved the big monsters back in the day while also being self-aware enough to tell a great story.

GREEN LANTERN #3
- I’m giving this one another issue or two before I drop it. I’ve never been a huge Green Lantern fan, and unfortunately this relaunch isn’t changing that. I want to like GL — I really do.

KILL SHAKESPEARE TP VOL 02
- I really like this original series, and don’t be surprised if it ends up in an “Adapt This” column soon.

RACHEL RISING #3
- I read the first issue of this one based solely on it being a new project from Terry Moore. Issue #1 was absolutely fascinating, so I’m hooked.

STAR TREK LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #2 (OF 6)
- Such a weird crossover, but a lot of fun so far.

SUICIDE SQUAD #3
- Honestly, this is actually one of my favorite books of the New 52 titles. I have no idea why, but I totally love it.

ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #4
- Hey, it’s like a brand new day or something, right? Seriously, though – this series continues to deserve all the great press it’s getting.

UNWRITTEN #31 (MR)
- This series, Fables, and Sweet Tooth are my favorite ongoing comics from Vertigo.

Notes: Dropped a few series (including Grifter) from my early New 52 selections, and as expected, a few more series from Marvel, IDW, and Image took their place. Among this week’s comics, Green Lantern and Batman & Robin are probably the next to get axed, unless there’s an awesome turnaround for one or both of the series. I also decided to include collections in each week’s rundown, as there are a few series I skip in single-issue format to wait for the collected editions.

As always, you can checkout the full list of new releases at Diamond Previews. I’d love to hear which comics you’re picking up, and which series you think I should add to my list.
