With the arrival of the new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” this afternoon, it seemed as if everyone in my social media circle seemed to experience a simultaneous, life-changing, world-shattering shift in perspective that suddenly replaced whatever they previously considered THE GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER WITNESSED with the two-minute preview of Christopher Nolan’s final Batman movie.
Me? I thought the trailer was, well… pretty okay as far as trailers go.
Don’t get me wrong — I’m not saying I disliked what I saw. It was a perfectly acceptable trailer for the film, and I am quite certain that “The Dark Knight Rises” will be an excellent movie and go on to make bajillions of dollars at the box office and I will totally love it. And heck, my judgement is notoriously suspect anyways. I remember saying a few years ago, “That pretty-boy from ‘A Knight’s Tale’ is going to play Joker? Nolan has clearly jumped the shark.”
Simply put, I just didn’t think the new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” was the religious experience that many people I follow made it out to be. But hey, that’s their opinion, and this is mine. If people prefer a villain who sounds like the drive-thru intercom at Taco Bell, good for them.
Okay, I kid… I kid. (Sort of.)

Having concluded my little rant, here’s an excerpt from a piece I wrote up for IFC after watching the trailer, in which I list five things I didn’t see in the trailer but want to know more about:
2. Bane’s Bane
Sure, we’ve seen that Nolan’s take on Bane will have him wearing something akin to the character’s iconic mask, but we haven’t seen any evidence that the character will also share his comic-book counterpart’s affection for the chemical compound known “Venom.” In the character’s comics history, Bane used the powerful drug to give him enhanced strength and durability, which he eventually used to “break” Batman over his knee. His reliance on the drug proved to be both an asset and a liability, as he became dangerously addicted over the source of his criminal career.
Thus far, we’ve seen little evidence of any Venom in Bane’s life, though there’s a chance he might have alluded to this at some point in the trailer or “The Dark Knight Rises” prologue at some point — we’re still trying to decipher what he said in that footage. (More on that in a bit.)
