My favorite hockey fights from movies that may or may not be about hockey

March 26th, 2012 by Rick Marshall · No Comments ·

I love hockey movies.

I don’t care if it’s “The Mighty Ducks” or “Slap Shot,” hockey movies are right up there with football movies among my favorite sports-related films. Maybe it’s because I didn’t play baseball or basketball when I was younger, but movies about those two sports have never really connected with me — and yes, that includes “Field of Dreams” and “Hoosiers.”

The latest hockey movie to hit the big screen is “Goon,” a new film starring Sean William Scott as a bouncer who finds his true calling as the enforcer on a minor league hockey team. In honor of the film’s arrival, I put together a list of my favorite hockey fights from movies, complete with video.

Here’s an excerpt from the list:

“Slap Shot” (1977)

It’s one thing to get into a fight during a game, but it’s another thing when your players can’t even wait for the game to start before dropping their gloves and going at it. “Slap Shot” is widely regarded as one of the best hockey movies ever made, and this scene featuring a pre-game fight and its aftermath is one of the sequences that made it so darn memorable.

God, I love that film. You can read the rest of the list at IFC.com.
